I have just finished "Complete Introduction to Environment Art" by amazing @FastTrackTutorials (https://www.artstation.com/fasttracktutorials) and I could not be happier with the results.
I created two different versions of this project:
- Version 1 (pictures on the top) – I created everything in the scene, except for the big trees. I needed larger foliage to enhance the lighting, but all the concrete beams, pillars, walls, pipes, and ivy were made from scratch.
- Version 2 (pictures on the bottom) – In this version, I incorporated some free assets from Fab the UE Marketplace (link below) because I wanted to focus on scene dressing and level design. I was really excited about this part—thinking about how to guide the player through the environment as if it were a game.
For example, I blocked off less important corridors with rubble piles. They’re still accessible, but visually, it’s clear they aren’t the main path. In the main hallway, I placed objects in a zigzag pattern to naturally draw the eye towards the end of the corridor and used lighting to subtly guide the player’s movement.
Since this project was purely for rendering and wasn’t meant to be playable, I didn’t worry about extreme polycount optimization. Instead, I kept slightly higher topology where it helped achieve better visuals.
My Workflow & Tools
I worked through the full environment pipeline, using:
- Blockout – Unreal Engine 5
- Modeling, UV unwrapping, retopology – 3ds Max
- High-poly sculpting – ZBrush (especially for concrete details)
- Foliage creation – SpeedTree
- Material creation – Custom concrete material in Substance Designer
- Texture Baking – Marmoset Toolbag
- Hand-painted Textures – Substance Painter
- Scene Dressing, Lighting & Rendering – Unreal Engine 5
